THE
ART NEWSPAPER
June 1998BUYER BEWARE
Holocaust Losses
The Art Loss Register database currently has records of numerous works
looted from public and private collections between 1939 and a945. A full-time art
historian will now be deployed to register additional missing works of art free of charge.
The Art Loss Register intends to cooperate fully with the New York State Banking
Department's Holocaust Claims Processing Office. It will also work with the
Holocaust Art Restitution Project (HARP), the World Jewish Congress Commission on Art
Recovery (CAR) and other specialist projects dedicated to tracing Holocaust art, including
those of the Association of American Museum Directors and the National Association of
Insurance Commisioners. With its expertise and technology for checking auction house
sales internationally for stolen art, the Art Loss Register has offered to make this
screening service available to all organisations concerned with the identification and
recovery of wartime losses.
